Lots Going on in Taylor Ranch

Thanks to partnering with Marie Hughes Elementary School, on May 15, 2018 NWOC resumed its Bike Safety tradition on the westside.

During the past few years NWOC joined with the Coronado and Sunport Optimist Clubs, and the OC of Albuquerque to conduct the Bike Safety Program at Rotary Park in Bernalillo.

Optimists Help Kids Stay Safe

"We're back home now, thanks to Marie Hughes Elementary School welcoming us as a community partner," says Corky (Frank) Frederick President  of the Northwest Optimist Club.

For the past three years, NWOC has worked with the ABQ Parks and Recreation group to provide Bike Safety Rodeos for youngsters in Bernalillo.  Now we are focused on annual in-school Bike Safety Rodeos for fourth graders at Marie Hughes.

The Optimist Bike Safety Rodeo with CABQ's unit includes an obstacle course and skills tests.

"NWOC donates a boy's and a girl's bike at the event," says Club Secretary Robert Martinez.  The club also provides Completion Certificates to all of the participating fourth graders.

Traditionally, participating youngsters receive free helmits and have their bikes made safer.  Brakes, tires and steering mechanisms would be checked.  "We're working up to resuming those portions of our usual efforts."  Participation in the event is free.
