District's Partnership with NMSD Helps Students All Win

Through the CCDHH

Nthabeleng MacDonald won this year's $2500 District CCDHH scholarship.  Nthabeleng is a senior at the New Mexico School for the Deaf and is looking into three options for college next year.  Her winnings will help pay the way.

From Albuquerque and boarding at NMSD, Nthabeleng was sponsored by the Evening Club of Albuquerque and the Northwest Optimist Club.

Through the diligent efforts of our District CCDHH Chairman Jim White, the New Mexico-West Texas District has maintained an excellent partnership with the New Mexico School for the Deaf, a connection originally forged by Dan Hardin and Devon Stokhof de Jong.

While the EOC-EHS Partnership Made a Good Showing,

The Sunport-St. Mary's of Belen Partnership Won the Oratorical

Samantha Jaramillo won the 2018-19 NM-WT Oratorical Contest and we're all hoping she will take the baton on to win the Regional and World contests in June.

Winning the District contest yields a $2,500 first place scholarship to Samantha, a $1500 scholarship to Cassandra Marcellus of Del Valle High School in El Paso (sponsored by Bel Air Optimists), and a $1000 scholarship to Albuquerque's Diana Martinez of Eldorado High School (sponsored by the Evening Optimist Club).

The winner of our Regional Contest will add $5000 to her/his scholarship fund, and the first place winner of the World Contest will add $15,000, second place will add $10,000 and third place will add $5000 to their scholarship funds.

Partnering with a school definitely pays off for the club, the school and for the youth!  For several years Sunport Optimist Club has worked closely with St. Mary's School for the Scholarship Contests, and it works.

Thanks to the OI Foundation, the District awards $10,000 in scholarships each year.  Get ready for 2019-20.
